The problem with a design company is that when a design is made, sometimes, it is made to be aesthetically pleasing, and non-SEO friendly.

I did not want to install too many widgets on the Wordpress page and simply decided to just put a blog on the page.

The term that I've researched for my company which is doing "Design" and "Marketing" was "Packaging Design" as we are pretty good at Packaging Design for medical products and Food packaging after working on projects for Nestle, BASF, J&J, and Unilever. We also have some local SMEs who engage us like Unicurd, and we do a whole range of product packaging design.

Visibility is a company with 18 years of history, however, it does not have much of a digital presence. With a new site launch in March 2020, the site displays a lot of images but does not have much in terms of words, making SEO difficult.

I decided to start a blog, and after writing several blog posts on the basics of packaging design, (https://pack.design.blog/) I decided to test by putting it all on a URL I bought, http://www.pack.sg/

This blog on the company's website is basically a landing page, unlinked to the rest of the page, but has a lot of content on packaging and design. The page is long, loaded with keywords and I labeled a lot of images on the page as well as keyed into the header of the page.

After doing this, I added the page to my Google Search Console and put in the codes in my Google Analytics to track.

I've done some blogging and do have quite a following and even for this new blog, I get about 100 reads a week.

I hope that by doing all the SEO possible on packaging design, and putting the blog unlinked on my company's website, I can draw traffic and get high ranks in SEO.

This is 2 days of work, and I've added a lot of images loaded with keywords and now I'm sharing and doing backlinks as much as I can to packaging design. And hopefully, with all these efforts together, I can get my blog on www.visibility.com.sg to be ranked highly on Google search.

Wish me luck,

There are a few pretty posters around Singapore on the police force. The posters look good and put the Police Officers in a good light. There are also several advertisements on TV on this used for recruitment.

However, today with social media, it seems futile to have a beautiful image when people feel that the reality is much different.

Children handcuffed by police at Katong

CIVIL ACTIVISTS ARRESTED & HARASSED FOR SILENT PROTEST OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT HOUSE

Elderly woman arrested and handcuffed by police after reporting a lost pawn shop ticket

And the list goes on.

I personally have experienced trying to report a lost bicycle, but was dissuaded as the officer keeps asking me if I've misplaced it. I told him I want to file it, and he replied that many bicycles go missing and they don't have enough resources to find my bicycle.

The same goes for my stolen car (more than once), and things stolen off my motorcycle.

When someone broke into my house at Oei Tiong Ham Park (opposite Holland Village), I called the police who took more than 6 hours to respond, (Police from Pasir Ris came) And their excuse, they lack resources.

I used to have many friends in the police force as I was part of the Military Police. Sadly, many of them left to join Cisco where they wear the same uniform and have definite working hours and good benefits, unlike the Police force where education and qualification matters most. (If you are not a scholar, there is a glass ceiling)

With lack of trust, and the impression that the police works for the rich and connected, it is hard to just have fancy posters and expect people to join the Police. Try winning back trust by doing the right thing and have common sense.

To get eyeballs, many News sites will "steal" videos and repost it as their News when something similar happens.

This usually makes a lot of people over react when they see something that happened a few years ago. Sometimes an event occurred elsewhere or it may be even staged, but it can be worded in such a way that it creates a different context and create fear and anger.

In 2018, What Now posted this video on their Facebook page and talking about it like it just happened, getting a lot of anger and outrage. However, I did find the same video on YouTube 4 years ago.

This is not an isolated incident. Many other Facebook pages and other news sites often post other videos out of context to create more clicks from the outrage. One main reason is because such videos and News create a reaction which makes you click on them, and drives traffic which brings them revenue.

So before you get outraged and share that news or video, you can easily search for the news online to see if it really happened or if it happened elsewhere or long ago, before you share the news. You should not share the fake news and encourage such behaviors.

Many governments want to promote technology, but many small businesses who do not understand technology. When funds are dumped and businesses feel the need to have technology, often money is wasted.

For many years, I've consulted several businesses in the US and Asia on digital media. There was a large education part, and even today, everyone wants to engage on social media and few know how.

Just a simple example.

QR Codes.

In 2011, everyone was talking about QR codes. QR codes were used in promotions and packaging and can be found on many printed sources. Some believe they have outlived their usefulness, and never did achieve the lofty goals creators had hoped. Indeed, many in the tech world have pronounced them “dead” as a viable marketing resource. But others believe just the opposite.

NFC allows information to be transferred between two devices via radio waves. Essentially NFC is similar to using a QR code but doesn’t require consumers to open the app and scan the code. NFC also allows users to create their own unique “code” for identification purposes.

So, are QR codes still relevant?

In my opinion, any form of technology needs to be examined and studied on how it fits into the business. Having QR codes for the sake of QR codes is a waste to time and effort.

Even in 2017, Singapore is trying to push QR codes. (Common Singapore QR code to be rolled out next year) QR codes by itself have little or no marketing value. QR codes does not look good and it takes a lot of effort to use QR codes, and the example of NFC is just other options to QR codes.

So should you use QR codes?

Like every technology, you need to develop a strategy on how to use the QR code. (or how to use YouTube, Facebook, etc)

If you are displaying it on an ad on YouTube or TV, it is highly unlikely that anyone will pause and pay any attention. You need to place it where people can access -- like by the entrance where people can scan to link to the latest promotions or discounts in store.

Make sure the links are not broken. The worse thing to have the QR code link to is a broken link. Customers take the effort to scan in the code, and if it links to a broken link, it shows badly about the reliability of the business. The next thing to take note, make sure that the link is mobile friendly as most people will scan the link on their mobile devices.

Using technology for the sake of "having it" is generally a waste of money. Many businesses have an awkward online store which makes navigation hard. Any technology needs to be well thought of before implementation, to see how it fits in the whole picture.

Technology is as good as the team behind it. If the team is passionate and empowered, they can take technology and support the business in many new ways, but having it by itself usually ends up as a big waste of money.

Most companies have an imbalance toward acquisition of customers over retention of them. Just compare marketing and advertising to support, service, newsletters and emails. Channeling people through the sales channel far outweigh building trust and relationships.

I found this customer journey created by Oracle, showing an infinite loop. When we travel travel through this journey as customers, we observe what works and what don't. There is often a shift that we can perceive between sell and service.

I like this Oracle model as it conveys empathy with the customer's perspective.

It is essential that we recognize that this is a continuous cycle, as customers come and go, in and out of this journey, and if the sales and service ends well, they would also recommend, and in today's digital world, this may mean that they are part of a new customer's research to start a new cycle again.
Understanding psychological principles of human behavior can benefit you in social media marketing.

Children's Curiosity.

Have you heard a kid asking, "Why ... ?"

"Why do things work the way they do?"

Young Children do not lie. They will continue to probe until they get a good answer.

However, adults think it too, even if they do not voice it out.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you watched a political debate and gotten frustrated by the politicians dodging direct questions?

How do you feel? Do you get frustrated?

This is the same when you engage in social media and do not give a satisfying answer. People do get frustrated and you will lose your audience. However, when you answer in full clear details, you may start to build loyal followers.

==============================================================

So the big question is: HOW DO YOU ANSWER IN FULL CLEAR DETAILS?

1) You need to do your research. There are many sites like Yahoo Answers, Quora and various forums on Linkedin and other technical sites which hold the answers, and you can find it using your favorite search engine.

Of course you will get a lot of answers, and some of them will be good while others rubbish. This is the problem with search engines today, and it they could give you what you want perfectly, then your social media engagement would not be required.

So to add value, you need to sift through the various answers, get a good understand of the topic itself, and add in your own knowledge. When you are ready, answer it on your own website. (or blog)

2) Now, you need to find the best way to answer them. Getting all the research materials, curating the content, putting together is a well organized fashion is key.

Simple is better. Avoid using too many technical terms, and edit over to make sure it reads well. To do that well, you need to ask yourself some questions.

a) How long is it going to be? (Short answer? Video? Blog? )
b) Which is the best format? (Video? Infographic? Text?) *Visual is always best
c) Determine how you are going to present it. (pdf for download, blog, answer on quora)

3) With a good reply, think of how you can retain the audience. Perhaps give them more information, a video and other links if they join your mailing list? Have a good idea of up-selling and giving more, even if they do not pay for more, having the option to contact them next time would be a bonus.

4) Gift Economy.

Free things can come at a price. Blogs, infographics, videos full of information and data, organized in a clear and brief manner is great value for people. If they get it for free, they may follow your blog, twitter account and join your mailing list.

When a waiter gives you attention and fulfills all your requests, answers all your question and offers you a free mint at the end, would you give the waiter extra tip? They are after all doing their job.

You can apply the same principle to the influencers whom you find their blog useful. Create links to their blogs, share useful tweets and help promote others. Have good meaningful discussions on other blogs with similar topics, and these influencers may do the same as well.

5) Engage with the audience.

When someone asks a question, give a good well thought of reply. (And not those short brief ones) Ask if some of them want to contribute to your blog.

Feel free to post and share blogs on different mediums, Twitter, Facebook pages, forums and other question polling sites. Engage with others on the sites.

The more people see you, the more they will like you.

It seems like for the past few days, all I get to see on the

the media sheds attention on Trump, the more ridiculous his campaign speeches

It seems like Donald’s trump campaign is just out to get
media attention and no matter what he says, he gets to pick up more supporters.
So why does the media give him so much attention?

From a PR point of view, Trump is newsworthy. He is a
presidential candidate of one of the bigger party in the United States. He is
touching on a lot of controversial topics like immigration and religion. He is
also taking on unpopular views, which many considers racist. And now, he is the
front runner of the GOP.

As you may know, different media reports do report news with
different tone and opinions, but many independent media try to put out facts
and the audiences connect the dots. Listening to media on both conservative
radio and liberal radio, I realize that many of the programs on the radios are
condemning Donald Trump, and some even resort to call him a liar and a racist,
yet his reach and support seems to increase.

I realize that even now, as I’m writing this article, I’m

their own view and opinions, and when facts are presented to different people,
they piece this information together and come up with their own conclusion.

So should the media be to provide the truth and help the audience
understand the truth, however, when the media tries to explain too much and
share one side of the story, it may feel as though it is not a balanced view.
But for many of the viewpoints, is there even a balanced view?

With Trump’s aggressive media use and shocking statements,
he does get a lot of coverage, and yet, how do you put a balanced opinion on
Trump’s call to ban Muslims from travelling to the US. If the media ignores
him, he can still reach many others on social media, and when media covers him,
does it put the US in a bad light for having so many racist supporters?

Do we not agree on racism? Do we not know what racism is?

It is very clear that our society is fragmented, and our values
and ethics differ a lot. On one hand, the statistics show that even with Trump’s
stance on Mexicans and Muslims, 36% support him. But this 36% is 36% of the
Republican Electoral Support not even 36% Republicans which is the minority of
people in the US.

I feel that the media is covering Trump because in today’s
digital media world, it is hard to get attention. Will we see Trump as
Republican Presidential Candidate? It is hard to tell. Even in the country with
free speech, many media don’t call a spade a spade. When Trump lies and does
not check facts, it is the responsibility for the media to inform and call him
out, and not to mislead.

Even when the role of media is not to protect and censor out
all the racist comments, the role of media is to inform – to uncover the truth

the truth, without opinions, without name calling.

Amos Yee is now a know person in Singapore. His online rant on Youtube is treated by the government as Sedition, even though he was 16 years old and there was actually not much of an audience until the media decide to pick it up and make it popular.

Primarily, his rant was targeted at the late Lee Kuan Yew, and as many may know this proves to be very unpopular and there were several individuals, including a grassroots leader of the PAP threatening to cut off the boy's Penis.

Most of the time, it is State media that flamed the flames towards Amos and publicized his video. Because Amos cannot be charged saying bad things about a dead person, He was charged under sedition act, because his video contained a rant against Christians as well.

I do not believe that the use of sedition law in this case is justified. It seems to be politically motivated, even towards this 16 year old seeking attention, who is obviously no threat.

In law, sedition is overt conduct, such as speech and organization, that is deemed by the legal authority to tend toward insurrection against the established order. Sedition often includes subversion of a constitution and incitement of discontent (or resistance) to lawful authority.

Clearly, on Digital Media, the laws are still relatively new and this will set precedence and if Amos is convicted, the Sedition Act seems to be able to clamp down on any dissent online.

I've asked many Christians about the incident, and even after watching the video, they do not really feel offended, and agreed that the boy needed help. For those that felt offended, a lot of them were supporters of LKY who have not viewed the video and were all up in arms about prosecuting the 16 year old.

After engaging with 16 year olds, I realized that swearing and rebellious nature was a common thing. This has of coursed because more serious than it should and Amos may need some punishment, but clearly, this is not Sedition.

However, the Straitstimes is also used to stir up negative emotions towards the boy as "31 March that Amos’s mother, Mrs Mary, filed a police report on her son." However she did not. They painted a picture of this uncontrollable boy which must be stopped.

I would say people need to take a lot less offense of what's going on online. If you think the title offends you, why click on it and get angry?

Don't be confused when you see a lot of friends suddenly stop wearing underwear (on Facebook)

It’s a 2014 Breast Cancer Awareness game and you will get caught up in it if you liked or commented on your friend’s Facebook status. If you haven’t been tricked into it already, here’s what you can accept the second you respond to the status!

A message that reads as such:

LOL, you should not have liked or commented!!!! Now you have to pick one from these below and post it to your status. This is THE 2014 BREAST CANCER AWARENESS game. Don’t be a spoilsport, pick your poison from one of these and change your status, 1) Damn diarrhoea 2) Just used my boobs to get out of a speeding ticket 3) Anyone have a tampon, I’m out 4) How do you get rid of foot fungus? 5) Why is nobody around when I’m horny? 6) No toilet paper, goodbye socks. 7) Someone has offered me a job as a prostitute but I’m hesitant. 8) I think I’m in love with someone, what should I do? 9) I’ve decided to stop wearing underwear. 10) It’s confirmed, I’m going to be a Mummy/Daddy! 11) just won £900 on a scratch card 12) I’ve just found out I’ve been cheated on for the last 5 months. Post with no explanations. So sorry I fell for it too!!!!! Looking forward to your post Ha ha.

Haha, it might be funny, but when too many people do not get it, it may quickly stop being funny. Well now you know what's going on.

If you have been pranked, now at least you know why...
As some people may have a limited mobile plan, Facebook actually autoplay videos for you.

To turn it off, the most straight forward way is to go here.
https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=videos

Don't worry if you do not have the tab. If you don't, it means autoplay does not happen for you.

Enjoy!

Remember, on your mobile phones, there is also an autoplay setting which you need to turn off.

For Apple products go to iOS settings, not Facebook. Scroll down to under app settings and then click Facebook. Click settings. 2nd section down there is choice for autoplay. Click it and change to off.

For Android, go to Facebook, click on settings. Scroll down to under app settings (Not Account settings)
Click on a section on Video-Autoplay and click it and change to off.

I've recently visited Sri Lanka with my 75 year old mum and updated the "Visit Dambulla, Sri Lanka" webpage. And I've asked my mum her thoughts after visiting Sri Lanka.

I love Sri Lanka, it has great beaches, nice waterfalls, great wildlife, interesting ruins, beautiful temples and cool highlands and tea plantations. However it does have its problems. Recently, I was in Sri Lanka in July 2014 with my mom and here is her thoughts I'd like to share so others will know if it is suitable for them to go.

1) Sri Lanka is much better now. With a highway connecting the airport to Colombo, travel time from 2.5 hours is cut to slightly over an hour.

2) Everyone is out to get your money. Within a week of travel, you can hear plenty to horror stories.

Cab driver (or Tuk Tuk driver) never have change. A 300LKR ride becomes 1000LKR

Driver does not recognize roads or read maps. Very often a tourist with Google Maps have to direct driver.

Prearranged fee to airport can change. 2500LKR can become 3300LKR with a 300LKR toll on the highway and sometimes 3300LKR per passenger if passenger decides to pay more.

Taxes and Service Charge is not shown till you get the bill

Entry to some locations is US$30 to Tourists and less than $1 for local. (or even free)

There is always a local menu and local price for food and things.

Traffic is a mess, 40km trip can take 1.5 hours.

3) Service in many hotels is simply amazing. Luggages carried, rooms made with nicely folded towels, and staff happy with 100LKR tip.

4) Weather can be very bad for people not used to the tropics. Its HOT, MUGGY or RAINY. Humidity is always high and showering 3 times a day is common. On top of that, you get lots of bugs, mosquitoes and such. To make it worse, not a lot of places have airconditioning.

How to be Batman with low cost?

1) Find black cat
2) Befriend a black cat
3) Put cat over your head.

You are now Batman! (For photos)

There is even a TEDxTransmedia in 2013

Transmedia storytelling (also known as transmedia narrative or multiplatform storytelling) is the technique of telling a single story or story experience across multiple platforms and formats using current digital technologies. It is not to be confused with traditional cross-platform media franchises, sequels or adaptations. From a production standpoint, it involves creating content that engages an audience using various techniques to permeate their daily lives. In order to achieve this engagement, a transmedia production will develop stories across multiple forms of media in order to deliver unique pieces of content in each channel. Importantly, these pieces of content are not only linked together (overtly or subtly), but are in narrative synchronization with each other. (Wiki)

In terms of digital media, I feel that the understanding Transmedia and the trends is very important and definitely a must in any movie franchise. When telling a story of several parts, after launching a successful book, understanding Transmedia can develop a fan base, crowdsourcing fan fiction and co-creating a rich world where fan can identify with is more important than merchandizing and making money, giving parts of a story away.

Imagine "Lord of the Rings", "Star Wars" and "Harry Potter" if you sold the merchandizing after book 1, how much of your story and brand will you have lost.
The Internet business is built for trust. From Amazon to
Ebay, many online businesses enable strangers to meet and trust each other for
transactions. It took a long time before people embraced the Internet, making
it more open and collaborative. Making transaction online relies on a lot of
trust. Trust that the buyer pays and the seller actually sells the right
product and ships the products that are paid for. There are many checks and
balances build in place to encourage honesty and simply do what is supposed.

Trust and reputation are two interrelated concepts. We can
find trust at personal level. Reputation expresses an opinion resulting from
collective opinions of community members. This evaluation may lead to risks
such as penalty of innovative and minority ideas, problem described as “tyranny
of the majority”. (http://www.gnuband.org/files/papers/trust_it_forward_Tyranny_of_the_Majority_or_Echo_Chambers_paolo_massa.pdf) If they give each user
reputation scores that take only other similar users’ opinions into account,
they run the risk of becoming “echo chambers” in which like-minded people
reinforce each others’ views without being open to outside perspectives.

On Twitter, Facebook and Wikipedia, perhaps, most of the
webpages on the Internet, having an honor code is very important. On Twitter,
Facebook, LinkedIn and the other social networking sites, you use your real
profile so your friends, contacts, classmates and other acquaintances can find you
and connect. Real accounts and profiles are important for online businesses to
function as well. Today, more websites allow you to login using your Facebook
profile and your real profile is important for many of the other services to
function well.

However, when people use fake profiles on Facebook, the
whole fabric on what the Internet is built on is disrupted. Many people waste
their time to maintain fake profiles just to spread hate and troll online. This
behavior is very unproductive and serves absolutely no purpose -- sort of like
the Nigerian Spam emails you get. Most of the people can see through the veil
and ignore the trolls online that are just out to get a reaction and pick
fights.

Sadly, when a government is involved in Astroturfing and
running fake accounts to "defend" their own opinions, it becomes a waste
of taxpayers money.

A property which characterizes the relationship between
trust and reputation is reciprocity. The reciprocity is defined as the
reciprocal exchange of assessment (favorable or not). Decrease any of these
automatically conduct to the reverse effect.

Like it or not, it is important that our society do not
degrade to hate mongering and abuse, however controlling the medium, and being
intolerant to bloggers critical about their policies, will only drive people to
continue their conversations on other platforms and use fake IDs.

In Singapore , although communication is more democratic
today than what it was before, laws like defamation or contempt against critics
are use used when the government could simply engage these parties in an debate
to collaboratively find solutions to solve the problems.

Singaporeans are not stupid, they are very capable of
finding solutions that work for them. There seems to be an open call for ideas,
however, many good ideas are rejected by the government because it simply comes
from the opposition. There are many views and opinions online, and just because
they are different from the government’s view, it does not necessarily mean
they are destructive, but instead it means they care about their country to
comment. There are always the good, the bad and the ugly, online and in real
life. Singaporeans today are better educated, and can think critically.

To say that “satisfied people don’t go to the Internet, unhappy
people do” feels like the Prime Minister has given up on engagement. It takes
time to build trust and reputation but it is very easy to lose it. Sadly, there
will only be more “unhappy people” as the future unveils more technology to
keep more people connected – on the Internet.

Many organizations, governments and companies want to get on to Social Media because they want to hear good things about their companies and perhaps get business with the help of word of mouth. However, it is important to know that even when businesses are planning and building social media programs and campaigns to try to gather more support, no matter how enthusiastic they are to create the best campaign, customers will always engage on their own time.

People go on social media to feel connected with friends and family. However, they are not going to "connect" with a brand or a business. Companies must strive to a higher purpose to design sharable experiences that deliver tangible value in return for the customers' "time, attention, endorsement and data."

Even when a customer gives a negative feedback, the feedback can be used as a learning case so other customers may not get the same negative experience. It does take time and effort to give feedback, positive or negative. For some customers, the situation can actually be saved, and resolving it transparently can win positive sentiments as well.

Take in the good and the bad.

Stay Relevant.

From Today Singapore where replies are disabled, showing how eager the government is listening to the citizens.

Previously, Singapore can ignore the coffee shop talks as they control and still control all forms of media. Ranked 149/179 on Press Freedom, Singapore has always struggled in winning views.

On Social Media, China, Vietnam, Sri Lanka have a lot of angry people online, and Singapore have their fair share. The fact that in many of these controlled countries with poor press freedom, views are very polarized and there are many hurtful remarks as many of these people use fake IDs.

In the US, you do get the occasional troll, however, there are a lot of constructive feedback as well.

I would say, the reasons why many people criticize about your government or your company is mostly because they do care. They want to share their views, and if you can actually share the reasoning behind your opinion, some may understand and you can win some over.

I must say the Prime Minister is trying to communicate, and I must be supportive of him trying. However, I do have some opinions to share.

Social Media being quick and real time, is actually a great opportunity for you to improve your government. If you truly want to engage, you will find that your actions and words, though gets analyzed by everyone, and critique by everyone, the bright side is that you can get instant feedback. To humanize is very important. If you reply transparently, share thoughts and confess to errors, people can see the human side and forgive. However, demonizing people who do not agree with you does not help at all.

On Social Media, we communicate. We do not wait for the best super-rationale, non-emotional and politically correct answer. It feels detached, scripted and formal. Proper engagement can gain trust and relevance. Policies can be crowd-sourced and co-created. If you want people to engage, you must listed to people, and take in both the good and bad. And most importantly, take actions that can regain the trust of citizens. (yes, even those on social media)
One might ask why people follow cats. I’ve looked at many
cat Facebook profiles and cat Twitter accounts, many of them are humorous, some
pretty serious, while others – creepy. The things shared on their posts are
generally cat or pets related.

So why are cats more popular?

There is a new dimension of self-expression with cats. These
creative people share cat pictures with captions on LOLCats in Catspeak, a
language with spelling and grammatical errors made to sound cute. (http://icanhas.cheezburger.com/ ) When
someone finds the images with the captions intersting, they share it with their
friends who share it with their friends as well. This happens so often that the
guy who started the I Can Has Cheezburger network managed to build a
multimillion dollar corporation out of silly cat pictures.

The following are reasons are why cats are popular online.

People relate to cats.

In many ways, cats are very expressive and have a range of
emotions which can be captioned. Many people on the Internet are introverts,
and cats are seen as self-dependent introverts because they are more likely to
spend time with themselves.

Cats are cute

People like to share cute animals like dolphins, hamsters
and puppies. And yes, cats are cute. To add to the cuteness, the behavior of
young cats are often unpredictable and interesting, and they can be very
creative to get what they want.

That’s how cat owners socialize

You can bring your dog out on a leash to a park, but you can’t
with your cat. Perhaps the Internet is the way for cat owners to socialize. If
they do not bother to bring their cats for walks, posting their cat photos and
videos and commenting on others is the next best thing. They can do it at their
own convenience.

Cats transcend culture

No matter what language you speak, cat videos can speak to
you. Recently, in August 28, 2013, over 10,000 tickets were sold for Lil Bub
and Friends (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx6cY84XmwU)

Festival. (http://www.walkerart.org/press/browse/press-releases/2013/walker-art-centers-internet-cat-video-festiva)

Cats are funny

Cats seem to be cute and self-possessed, but at the same
time arrogant and self-pompous, making them perfect vehicles for Internet
humor. Cats have a lot of dignity and somehow humans like to see them getting
humiliated online.

Culture shift to own cats

Many people own cats because of their lifestyles. Geeks tend
to own cats as cats don’t need walks and cats are pretty independent.
Everything is good when food and water is provided and the litter box is not
full. Cats are also gaining popularity as pets as people who own pets later in
their lives tend to get cats and many household with cats tend to own more than
one as well.

On the Internet, people can be interacting with friends and
other pet lovers by commenting and sharing cat video or pictures, even when
they are allergic to cats. Thus Internet cats become a social object to be
shared and conversation point to help connect people. Perhaps people secretly
want to be like cats as cats seem totally comfortable being exactly what they
are and they live for the moment.

Social Convergence

Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR is not fit for purpose, and we need something better to hold corporations to account for their social and environmental impact. Business is business -- If there is a conflict between maximising shareholder value and an environmental or social impact, the bottom line will win out in this model.

In many cases, CSR is framed in terms of restricting harm a business can do or to "white wash" its business activity, and little to do with having any good impact they can actually bring. In many cases, the more harm you do to society, the more funds is placed into CSR, as donating money to some causes or funding some initiative with a tiny fraction of the profits make is going to make the world a better place.

On social media, the customers do play a big role in sharing the good and the bad. Many corporations which may have been in the spotlight for doing something bad will have a lot of negative buzz created. This will in turn cause possibly boycott of the products or these customers pressure their politicians to do something, which may have a negative effect on the bottom line of the corporation. And sometimes, no amount of CSR can change the opinions of the public.

A common question asked is "Is there a better way in which we might assess and improve business’s impact on society and the environment?" When people start to get more information from the articles they read and conversations they engage in, many things that corporations are involved in get exposed. It is not enough just to have a CSR program and believe that it will change the impression of the public, corporations need to think beyond CSR and engage with stakeholders beyond shareholders.

------------------------------------------------------------------

On Social Media, the question asked is "How can we used New Media to get closer to customers?" Basically, people like to do business with people they like. However, in many organizations, their primary focus is on operations, margins, and efficiencies over customer experience. It is hard for a customer to empathize when the organization is more focused on a spreadsheet. It is impossible to change if you can't see what it is they value.

Humanizing the brand and being customer-centric starts with breaking down internal silos. It is having a culture of listening and communicating with customers as well as using feedback to improve relationships and experiences. Its about empowering the employees to improve and contribute to a new era of customer engagement and collaborations. They have to care, not because they are human, but because it is part of corporate culture.

Innovation and collaboration is an outside-in and an inside-out process. Engaging with customers forces a groundswell that inspires top-down transformation from the bottom-up. It is time to invest in relationships that yield insight and impact. To gain influence, the business must earn affinity, loyalty, and advocacy through ongoing relevance.

There is much learning and adaptation, and a corporate culture that recognize the connected customer and having a management infrastructure necessary to adapt is key.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Putting 2 and 2 together, transforming CSR with customer advocacy can bring the social to the next level. In an era of capitalism, many people feel the income gap problem between the haves and have nots needs to be addressed. Striving to have high stock price does not mean a company cannot also have high social capital. Philanthropic Capitalism -- the merger of philanthropy and capitalism may set the stage for a new era of socially responsible businesses.

There are many opportunities wealth provide, and many questions on the responsibility of wealth. With more companies increasingly interested in humanistic capitalism, a consumer can find opportunities to work together to make the world a better place through everyday commerce.

Many companies are mismanaging CSR opportunities. Because the initiatives need to yield more returns in the form of sales or simply branding, often millions of dollars are spent on CSR Programs and millions more marketing the campaign. The companies are also not transparent and not taking on the core problem or even the problems they cause while doing business, and CSR are often seen as "white-washing" the companies.

Meanwhile, social projects, socially driven by staff and customers can be supported by the company, and this gives a different dimension to the social engagement. Otherwise, companies can also use their influence to promote and create social awareness. The RED program for Starbucks is a great example where customers paying with the RED rewards card also contributes to Global fund to help people living with HIV / AIDS in Africa.

Philanthropic capitalism nurtures empathy into a competitive advantage. It allows the corporation, the staff and customers to do good while doing business together, and with social media, amplify their efforts for a greater cause.

It is natural for Social Media to converge socially. It is the future direction for the social evolution.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With Traditional Media, you would think this is such a great caring company. Probably a good company to do business with. However with technology and social media today, marketing is no longer a simple job. Customer service is not just a nice to have department to generate report. Engaging in social media is not just something a company could do because its cool or everyone has it.

Singtel Word Cloud.

Many of the words used to describe Singtel does not seem that positive. Isn't the vision share throughout the company?

Singtel actually has quite a good response team on Facebook, they can direct the customers to the right place to share their problem. However, these other places are not very accessible. I've tried calling Singtel in the past and it too such a long time before I could talk to a human on the other end, I usually end up going to a Singtel store, and sometimes, they want me to call to resolve the problem.

So in essence, customer service is not so good.

And yes, on Twitter, Singtel is not so well spoken of. just type in Singtel in Twitter search, and I've always came out with negative remarks.

You can also find a lot of blogs talking negatively about them. So why are companies on social media if they are not engaging? Are the vision, mission, core values not shared by the employees?

I feel this is very common in traditional Asian companies. When the organization get to a certain size, the management although would like to embrace new technology, trends and communication channels, the staff, customer service and other employees not necessarily gets empowered much to do things. As a result, most of the brilliantly written values are not shared through the organization.

Lets look at the govern....

I guess I should not go further and you get what I mean.

It is important that the values of a company is shared throughout the organization. If the customers want to be treated right, the staff has to be well trained, paid well and empowered to do their jobs. Having social media does not make customer service better.
-- Huffington Post

When it reaches international media, the national problem suddenly becomes the talking point and there are a lot of buzz all over social media, all reacting to the news.

Education Minister Heng Swee Keat even talked about it in a post on Facebook on Wednesday morning as he praised the resolution. And ultimately, with the words form the top, the situation seems to be resolved. The students need not wear wigs and all the blame was on the principal and not the education system in Singapore. The resolution did not take too long before it became a more serious discussion, and everything seemed to be rather resolved. Some people agreed with the principal about the agreement made should be followed, while other feel that the principal should support the students and not force her backwards beliefs on them.

With other company and crisis like Scoot's virtual flight contest, McDonald's Hello Kitty Promotion and National Geographic's publicity stunt at Raffles Place, it is important to know the basics to resolve any PR or social media crisis.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are some few steps when a crisis hits:

6) Channel the affected consumers / conversations to pro-brand environment (like corporate blog / Facebook Page)

7) Actively listen online and identify potential escalating issues and resolve them quickly.

Many companies do not care about social media crisis until it happens. Most of the incidents come from situations out of the control of the companies, and will happen whether the companies have or have not engaged on social media.

It is important to have a clear understanding and all the facts right, and most importantly -- act fast. Crisis can happen to anyone at any time. It is important to know how to react to these situations when it arise and fix it before it becomes a meltdown.

Disruptive Innovation is an innovation that helps create a new market and value network, and eventually goes on and disrupt an existing market and value network.

Sustaining Innovation is innovation that evolves around existing ones with better values, allowing companies to compete against each other's sustaining improvements.

Disruptive technology is a subset of Disruptive Innovation as the innovation may be a simple process or mindset. Civil Innovation, Relief 2.0, and many other organizations are focused on changing mindsets of "helping" to Engage, Enable, Empower and Connect. And transform inefficiencies, bridge gaps, address value creation and connect stakeholders instead of just providing aid indefinitely.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think there will always be disruption innovation happening for profit. Social Media, has changed a lot of the media landscape. Spotify, Pandora and other online media streaming are changing the way people consume music. It does benefit the consumers to have alternatives, and sometimes, it is not the fault of the big brands and companies that they fail.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would like to think and see more disruptive innovations in the real of social good. "Good Disruptions" are needed urgently for the environment, reducing the income gap, and simply promoting peace.

I feel that the financial markets and other disruptions that create wealth for the few already wealthy individuals are already creating such a big divide between the rich and the middle class, that the conventional methods of taxing the rich and redistributing wealth does not work well today.

There are many inefficiencies on how many people perceive themselves as change agents or helping, but in reality, what they do is focused on the short term, and there is actually a lot of resources used (that can be more efficiently used) and does not even solve the root problem.

Sometimes even before looking at education reforms, one may even need to look into solving housing problems, lack of infrastructure and opportunities, etc. If a person does not have a roof over their heads, it is hard to think about having a good education to better themselves. If NOW does not get met, and survival is hard, the FUTURE does not seem that promising either.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am writing and exploring more on GOOD DISRUPTION over the next few months, if you have any requests on specific industries, please let me know. And if you want to contribute, feel free to contact me.
